X (2022)
An homage to 70s slasher exploitation films.
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
Plot: A group of aspiring actors rent a guesthouse on a farm, where they plan to make an adult film. But the elderly couple that owns the farm does not approve of their activities and will do anything to stop them.
Analysis: The movie does follow a classic slasher formula of young people with loose morals falling victim to a killer. There’s an obvious nod to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and reviewers tend to favor this movie over the recent remake of the classic film. The movie is definitely smutty and gory, so not for the easily offended. The beginning is surprisingly fun and even humorous before the terror begins.
There are some relatively nuanced themes involving the fleeting nature of youth, beauty, and opportunity, but they aren’t fleshed out in a meaningful way. I like the cinematography of the film, which is more thoughtful and well executed than most slasher flicks. The acting was solid and the cast fit their characters well. This is not really my type of movie, but I recognize the higher quality of filmmaking that does not usually accompany a movie like X.
