The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda (2019)

The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda (2019)

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

This book was chosen as part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club and spotlights several female characters, which I enjoyed.

The Analysis:

Avery Greer struggled after losing both her parents and eventually, her grandmother, yet things start to turn around when she meets the vivacious Sadie Loman. The Loman family owns a lion’s share of the rental properties in the coastal town of Littleport, Maine. Sadie uses her family’s wealth and resources to get Avery a job and even a home in their guest house. But when Sadie is found at the bottom of a cliff, Avery’s world shatters yet again. Can she move on without her best friend and get to the bottom of exactly what happened the night Sadie died?

The story is told with alternating timelines, with events taking place both in the present as well as a year earlier. I don’t generally love this technique but it worked adequately to give the reader information and background as needed. Some actions taken by the characters seemed illogical at times and there were a couple of loose ends at the end of the book, which was annoying given the careful planning of the plot in other aspects.

There were a couple of unexpected revelations that I should have seen coming, but admittedly did not. Even with some unforeseen twists, the book didn’t blow me away. The Last House Guest had a decent plot but just wasn’t anything special for me. If you’re looking for an easy read that will still stimulate your brain a bit, this book will do the trick.
