The Killer (2023)
A nihilistic exploration of a killer dedicated to his craft by director David Fincher.
Laura’s Rating: 2/5 Stars
Plot: Michael Fassbender stars as an expert killer hired to take out a high profile target. When things go awry, he must clean up his mess before he is taken out himself.
Analysis: The job of an assassin is generally shown to be exciting and fast paced. Highlighting the uneventful waiting that makes up most of the job is what makes this movie unique. While I appreciate the new spin, there’s a reason that most assassins star in action movies - it’s exciting to watch. This was not.
After a slow build, it feels like we’re about to get some more interesting action, but the movie reverts back to a slow paced grind. There was little to no suspense and I wouldn’t call this a thriller. The Killer has the potential to be a great revenge movie like John Wick, but it falls short.
The side characters were actually pretty interesting, but we don’t get a lot of time with any of them. One of the two female characters did nothing but serve as the role of damsel in distress. Tilda Swinton’s character was the best in my opinion, but again, our time with her is limited. Michael Fassbender does a good job in the main role but the character certainly doesn’t display his range.
The whole film is pretty introspective and incredibly nihilistic, which isn’t the most fun thing to watch. Director David Fincher isn’t exactly known for his happy endings, but movies like Fight Club and The Game were a lot more fast paced and exciting. I wouldn’t recommend this one.
