The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell (2023)
A friendly baking competition turns deadly in this charming mystery.
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
Plot: A long-running baking competition show hosted by a celebrity chef seems to be the target of a sabotage attempt or worse…
Analysis: The setup of the book is a show called Bake Week, a friendly baking competition hosted by a celebrity chef and held in a tent at a manor. Sound familiar? It’s as close to the concept of The Great British Bake Off as possible, including a celebrity chef host. Fans of the show will likely be interested in and amused by the novel’s premise.
A lot of the book feels like setup, laying the groundwork for things that will happen later on. It doesn’t drag out too much, but the end feels a bit choppy and rushed. There were multiple twists that I did guess ahead of time. They were still decent plot points, but maybe a bit predictable. I wouldn’t say this book was anything special, but it was an entertaining enough read, especially as a fan of Bake Off.
