The Club by Ellery Lloyd (2022)
A scandalous telling of the disastrous opening of an exclusive club.
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
Plot: The Home Group is a collection of exclusive members-only clubs, where celebrities can let loose without the fear of prying eyes. Island Home, the next club set to open, is planning a huge launch party with a carefully selected guest list. But deadlines, budgets, pressures, and personalities are pushing the CEO, staff, and guests to a breaking point.
Analysis: Throughout the narration, there are interjections of a magazine column reporting on the scandalous events taking place at Island Home. Perhaps because of this, I felt detached from the characters. There’s also way too many points of view and I didn’t care about some of the storylines. The vapid celebrity characters were as annoying as you’d expect, but they also felt like generic archetypes, rather than compelling characters.
The book was scandalous and dramatic, but not exactly a thriller. It felt like reading a gossip column with a first person point of view. I enjoyed The Club, but it wasn’t anything incredible.
