The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson (2018)

A family drama with an element of mystery and literary themes.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: Miranda Brooks grew up spending time with her Uncle Billy, doing scavenger hunts and visiting his bookstore, Prospero Books. Unfortunately, a falling out between Miranda’s mother and Billy abruptly put an end to all that. Years later, Miranda finds out that Billy has died — and left her Prospero Books, along with a final set of clues for one last scavenger hunt.

Opinion: This book is exactly what I expected it to be: a story about family and the past with an ongoing mystery at the center.

I, of course, liked the literary clues throughout the book and the setting of the bookstore. Prospero Books was well illustrated and I have a vivid mental picture of the store. Miranda was sometimes self-centered in an annoying way, but she does exhibit growth throughout the book. She and the other main characters were well developed, but the side characters were pretty bare bones.

There is some level of mystery and suspense, as well as tensions between characters to drive the plot forward. While I guessed a twist pretty early on, the ending was mostly satisfying and overall this was a cute read.
