The Batman (2022)
Laura’s Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Robert Pattinson stars as the caped crusader in the newest Batman film. The film has an 85% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $57 million on its first day in the US and Canada. I saw the movie at Grandview Theater and got to enjoy a Riddler themed drink! Check out my reviews of other Batman movies here.
The Analysis:
The film is not an origin story but focuses on a Batman who is relatively new to the vigilante game when a serial killer starts targeting public officials in a quest to uncover corruption in Gotham City. Throughout the film, Batman learns secrets about both the city and his own family.
I liked Robert Pattinson in the role but he has much more screen time as Batman rather than Bruce Wayne so I’m still on the fence about his portrayal of the billionaire. Zoë Kravitz nailed it as Catwoman and really fleshed out the character more than other films, despite a lack of origin story. I loved this iteration of the Riddler, who is much darker and more intimidating than the zany Riddlers of past Batman films. The serial killer plotline allowed Batman to show off his detective skills and later events in the movie felt very plausible in today’s world.
This Batman is similar to the Christopher Nolan trilogy in that it’s very grounded in reality. However, this movie feels grittier, with more realistic vehicles and a practical batsuit (RIP the constrictive cowl). There’s some great action sequences in this movie including a car chase scene that literally gave me chills. The visuals are thoughtful and well planned, giving the movie a nuanced edge. I didn’t really love the Nirvana song featured in the film, although it admittedly does match the vibe. I did really enjoy the classical score for the film done by Michael Giacchino which felt dark and threatening.
The 3 hour run time could have been cut down and it felt like there was a natural end point about ⅔ of the way through. The last third had a more action centered tone as compared to the brooding noir vibe of the earlier portion. There were a few moments towards the end that edged on cheesy but it wrapped up well. Overall, I really liked The Batman and would recommend it.
