Psych Movies

As a big fan of the tv show Psych, I was excited to learn that there are 3 movies to continue the hijinx of Shawn Spencer, psychic detective. This may be obvious, but don’t watch the movies unless you’ve seen the whole series. Here’s a brief review of each film:

Psych: The Movie- 2017 (2/5 Stars)

The first movie was unfortunately, the worst of the three. I wanted this movie to be better, but the plot was disjointed and tried too hard to be serious or meaningful at times. None of the movie made much sense; it really just served as a vehicle to revisit the characters and their classic punchlines. It’s basically an homage to the tv series, but that’s also what I wanted out of it. The movie had a cute ending but it wrapped too quickly.

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home- 2020 (3.5/5 Stars)

The second installment was much better than the first Psych movie (which you don’t have to watch but it would be helpful). There are cameos from all your favorite characters and a decent plot that is well fleshed-out. The characters of Shawn and Gus seemed more natural this time and were hilarious as always. There was also a fair share of touching moments, which I didn’t expect. The larger role for Lassiter certainly added to the film and having the whole crew involved made the cast feel complete. An enjoyable watch for Psych fans.

Psych 3: This is Gus- 2021 (2.5/5 Stars)

The third movie spin-off based on Psych was pretty average. It was better than the disorganized first movie but not quite as good as the second one. I liked that it focused on Gus a bit more, who is my favorite character, but often takes a backseat to Shawn. The movie was decently entertaining, but not great or special.

Overall, I liked getting to see how the lives of the characters continued and while these movies are by no means cinematic masterpieces, I still enjoyed watching them.
