Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (2021)

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (2021)

Laura’s Rating: 5/5 Stars

Written by the author of The Martian, this book again explores the concept of solitary space exploration. I read this for a book club and everyone really enjoyed it. This was also one of my top 5 books I read in 2022.

The Analysis:

Middle school science teacher Ryland Grace wakes up from a coma to find himself in a spaceship with no idea how he got there. Told in the present and through flashbacks, he slowly remembers that his mission may be very important to the future of Earth and beyond.

There is a lot of science and I occasionally glazed over but for the most part, it’s very approachable. I had a general idea of what was happening most of the time, even when it involved some advanced physics or biology. I enjoyed that the book is science fiction but in a plausible and grounded way.

I loved this book. Project Hail Mary is incredibly heartwarming and I was very invested.  At first I found the alternating timelines a bit confusing (there’s often little to no transition). I wasn’t immediately hooked but eventually I was very invested. I don’t want to give anything away so just read it!

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected and I’d recommend it for anyone. I would never have picked it myself but it was absolutely fantastic. This was a great audiobook so I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for something to listen to!
