A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A classic slasher horror flick written and directed by Wes Craven.
Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars
Plot: Teenagers start having nightmares about a terrifying man with knives for hands. When a girl ends up brutally murdered after a nightmare, the lines between the dream world and the awake reality start to blur.
Analysis: This movie feels very classic 80s, with high school aged protagonists getting into trouble that eventually turns deadly. This type of movie is not necessarily known for having a rich backstory, but I would have appreciated a little more about Fred Krueger and his past. Maybe this comes in the sequels and I’d be willing to watch another to find out.
I think parts of the movie have aged well, while others feel dated and cheesy. Some of the special effects are a bit rough and seem silly nowadays, but the general creepiness and a couple of the jump scares still hold up. Freddy Krueger is now an iconic character, so that is worth something as well. Unfortunately, the ending of the movie was seemingly a bit random and unexplained, which I didn’t love.
This is by no means a high quality piece of cinema, but I’d recommend A Nightmare on Elm Street for a spooky movie night with some popcorn.
