My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing (2019)

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

I borrowed this audiobook on a whim and really lucked into a great story! For those of you who enjoy audiobooks, this one is available on Libby and I enjoyed the narration.

The Analysis:

Honestly, I went in not knowing much about this book and enjoyed it that way so I won’t share too many details.

On the surface, Millicent and her husband live the classic suburban life: a big house, two kids, a country club membership. As it turns out, the couple also has a darker, more unconventional hobby that bonds them together…

This book can best be described as a domestic drama meets a twisty thriller. From the first chapter, this book had me hooked. I was dying to know more about the mysterious narrator. The story also includes a strong female character, Millicent, but her story is told from the man’s perspective. Rather than the usual tropes that come from the male gaze, author Samantha Downing simply tells a story through a character that happens to be a man. Her writing is sharp and intelligent, with an attention to detail that I very much appreciated.

For all the build up, I would have liked the ending of the book to be just a bit longer and more fleshed out. Things wrapped up a bit too quickly with a couple of potential plot holes. Overall, the book was something a bit different and it kept my interest the whole time. There’s definitely some dark and slightly gruesome details here and there so if you’re squeamish or easily rattled, this book may not be for you, but fans of thrillers and crime novels would really enjoy this.
