Mother’s Instinct (2024)

A suspenseful and dramatic exploration of grief.

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

Plot: Alice and Celine have picture perfect 1960s lives: beautiful homes, loving husbands, and sons who are best friends. But when tragedy strikes, grief and paranoia threaten to upset the balance of their delicate lives.

Opinion: I have been wanting to see this movie ever since I first saw the trailer, but the release plan was a bit strange. It was released in March of last year in Lithuania and then on only six screens in the US in July. It was finally available to stream in August, but I just recently watched it.

Mother’s Instinct has an interesting premise for a thriller film. Grief can be uncomfortable for everyone involved, both the parties grieving and the parties trying to comfort them. It’s hard to know the right things to say or do. In the film, one mother’s grief spirals out of control and one mother’s guilt and anxiety transforms into destructive paranoia.

Some scenes are gut wrenching and quite sad, but there’s an uncomfortable feeling that runs through the whole film. The story had some twists but ended up a bit predictable. Somehow, the plot just felt a little surface level, never cutting quite as deep as it should have.

The movie is deeply tragic and sad, but we don’t fully feel it as the audience. It’s also uncomfortable and frightening, but perhaps the tone was off or there just wasn't enough heart behind it. I had really high expectations for this movie and it turned out just okay.
