Mini Movie Reviews: Jumanji (2017) and Men in Black (1997)

Mini Movie Reviews

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) - 4/5 Stars

Four very different teens find themselves serving detention together and discover an old video game called Jumanji in the school’s basement. After choosing their characters and hitting start, they are transported into the universe of the game. They land in the jungle, taking on the physical appearance and skills of their chosen characters. The kids must beat all of the levels of Jumanji in order to escape the jungle alive. The movie is action packed, with quality comedic performances by the cast. For a blockbuster film that serves as a sequel to the 1995 movie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is surprisingly heartwarming and full of character development. I recommend if you’re looking for something with a bit of depth that is still lighthearted and entertaining.

Men in Black (1997) - 3.5/5 Stars

In the film, alien refugees live on Earth disguised as human beings. A secret organization called Men in Black regulates alien travel, facilitates extraterrestrial diplomacy, and polices the refugee population. When an undercover cop encounters a seemingly inhuman suspect, he discovers that there is an entire world he knows nothing about. Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, Men in Black doesn’t take itself too seriously, which allows it to be entertaining despite some cheesy characters and lines. The sci-fi comedy genre is somewhat rare and does not lend itself to a particularly sophisticated film, but Men in Black provides a solid dose of entertainment value.
