Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) -1/5 Stars
The movie stars a very young Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke and his “lawyer” Dr. Gonzo, played by Benicio del Toro. Under the influence of several psychedelic drugs, the two speed across the desert to Las Vegas, where Raoul is covering a motorcycle race for a sports magazine. By the time they check in, Raoul is having crazy hallucinations, making all the hotel bar patrons appear as lizards. The film’s drug-fueled antics were loosely strung together by Depp’s narration but it did not do enough to make the plot feel cohesive or purposeful. This movie is honestly just not made for me. It is based on a book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson that apparently reflects on the end of 1960s counterculture and the decline of the American Dream. If someone would like to enlighten me on how those themes appear in the film, please do, but I just didn’t get it.
Mortal Kombat (2021) - 1.5/5 Stars
This movie is what you’d expect from a film based on a martial arts fighting video game, except that this is better than the 90s version. The violence and gore is pretty on par with the game, with outrageous damage and fountains of blood. I didn’t expect much in the way of a plot but there was at least the story of Cole Young, a fighter with ninja warrior lineage previously unknown to him, that tied everything together. This may be appealing to viewers less familiar with the game, but a plot centered on a main character that is not part of game lore alienates some of the film’s target audience. The movie wasn’t objectively good but it’s entertaining enough if you know what you’re getting into and don’t mind a deviation from the traditional backstory.
