The Escape Room by Megan Goldin (2019)- 3.5/5 Stars
Four colleagues find themselves trapped in an elevator on their way to a last-minute mandatory meeting for their competitive and ruthless financial firm. It seems like the elevator is an escape room, designed to function as a team building activity or as a way to decide whose job might be on the chopping block. As time passes and the clues become more cryptic, it seems like the stakes might be higher than any of them had imagined. Will they be able to escape before all their dark secrets are exposed or worse? This book paints a vivid picture of the cutthroat world of high-level finance and reminded me of a more tame version of American Psycho in that respect. Everyone at the firm is gorgeous, intelligent, and polished, with the singular goal of making as much money as possible. I really liked the character development and there was a good level of suspense up until the end. Add this to your list if you’re looking for a thriller that isn’t too dark and twisty but still keeps you guessing.
His & Hers by Alice Feeney (2020)- 2/5 Stars
News anchor Anna Andrews has to cover a murder in a town she has been trying to forget, while criminal investigator Jack Harper must figure out who the killer is while covering his ties to the victim. There was so much hype for this book but it was a bit of a let down in the thriller & suspense genre for me. I wasn’t really invested in the characters and even as their backstories were filled in, I didn’t care about them. Many of the flashbacks felt disconnected from the present story and the relationships didn’t feel totally believable. A big reveal at the end can sometimes work well, but here it felt like it was too late. I just wanted more and this book didn’t excite me. I will say that the audiobook had great narration that worked well with the changing perspectives so I’d recommend listening to it if you’re interested!
