Memento (2000)
A mind-bending thriller from director Christopher Nolan, based on a short story from his brother, Jonathan Nolan.
Laura’s Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Plot: Leonard wakes up in a hotel room disoriented, as he has many times before. He suffers from short term memory loss after being attacked by a home intruder. Leonard uses notes, photographs, and tattoos to keep track of information and attempt to discover the identity of his attacker.
Analysis: Mind blown. This is the exact kind of movie I like. A little thriller/mystery with some unexpected moments. The movie really makes you use your brain and think to try to piece together what’s going on.
Memento is told in a non-linear format, with scenes shown both chronologically and in reverse chronological order. The broken timeline reflects Leonard’s memory loss and inability to remember the sequence of events leading him to the present. This is incredible film making by Christopher Nolan. Putting together this timeline in exactly the right way was crucial to making the film work and he pulls it off.
The acting in Memento is great as well and the characters both efficiently further the plot while also showcasing emotions like grief and frustration well. Memento really examines the importance of perspective, context, and history. The movie is definitely quirky and takes some concentration, but I’d highly recommend.
