Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid (2021)

A profile of a famous set of siblings and a detailing of a party gone awry.

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

Plot: Four siblings, the kids of famous singer Mick Riva, are throwing their annual summer bash. The party spirals out of control as their personal lives unravel over the course of the night.

Analysis: The story jumps back and forth between present day (the party) and the past, which covers the childhoods of the siblings and their parents’ relationship. The family drama is interesting, but it got old eventually. My issue is that not much really happens in the book. The story covers decades and various events in the lives of the Riva families, but there isn’t much of a climax. There are a few fights that blow up after simmering under the surface, but these don’t exactly make a full narrative.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is talented and this book has captivating writing that I wanted to keep reading. There are fun shoutouts to some of the author’s other books, but you don’t need to have read them for it to make sense. I enjoyed Malibu Rising, but it just wasn’t anything spectacular. I liked the other books I’ve read by TJR better.
