Laura’s Rating: 4/5 stars
This movie was picked by my friend Maria, one of my first ten followers. Thanks Maria! I originally saw this movie on Thanksgiving Day so I refreshed my memory before writing this review.
Knives Out has a star studded cast including legends like Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Plummer, and newcomer Ana de Armas. The film and cast received several award nominations, including Golden Globes nominations for Best Motion Picture, Best Actor for Daniel Craig and Best Actress for de Armas.
The Analysis:
I enjoyed the overall tone and feel of this film. The eclectic mansion and rich colors were beautiful and intriguing without coming off as garish. The setting and the story feels very reminiscent of an Agatha Christie novel. The quirks of the movie include Detective Blanc’s bizarre southern drawl, Marta’s inability to lie without vomiting, and the distinct personalities of each member of the Thrombey clan. It creates a charming and unique set of characters.
After Harlan Thrombey’s suicide (or murder?), the complicated family dynamics are slowly revealed through interviews and flashbacks from each family member’s point of view, a storytelling device which highlights the differences in how each person experienced and remembered the party.
The movie was able to keep me guessing, because even as I would think I had something figured out, a new element to consider was introduced. It wasn’t until close to the end that the audience really gets the full picture of what happened with Harlan on the night of his death. Also, there are a few “Easter Eggs” or interesting things that you may not notice on your first watch so I recommend looking up a video that points these out after you watch!
My favorite thing about this film is that it is an original story! While books and remakes can be great inspiration for movies, it is refreshing to see a quality story with no old source material. Perfect movie for a rainy weekend or a date night.
