Gone for Good by Joanna Schaffhausen (2021)
Laura’s Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
This book was suggested to me by my friend Sydney and I’m so glad she put it on my radar. A sequel to this book called Lone Gone is set to be released in August of this year and I can’t want to read it!
The Analysis:
Grocery store manager Grace Harper is part of an amatuer sleuthing group that tries to solve unsolved cold cases. She believes that the infamous serial killer known as the Lovelorn Killer is still alive in Chicago and she is getting close to discovering his identity. Detective Annalisa Vega lost a family friend to the Lovelorn Killer two decades ago, so when it appears he has resurfaced, she is determined to hunt him down before he is gone for good.
I really liked the character of Annalisa Vega. Annalisa’s uncertainty and insecurities made her relatable but she was also a badass. Willing to do whatever it takes to bring a killer to justice, she takes impressive risks and doesn’t shy away from danger. The shifting perspectives between Annalisa’s narration and Grace’s notes are not totally necessary but do help reveal information in different ways.
This book is very suspenseful and there were several twists, which I always enjoy. The characters were well developed and I liked that many of them had long histories that played into present day interactions. The book did get a little gruesome in places with descriptions of the serial killer’s MO. I get that it’s supposed to be disturbing but it made me squirm more than I would have liked so fair warning to avoid if you can’t handle graphic descriptions. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and tore through it. I’d recommend Gone for Good to fans of crime novels and thrillers, as well as true crime junkies who could relate to the online network of amatuer sleuths.
