Glass Onion (2022)

Laura’s Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

The highly anticipated sequel to Knives Out (2019) is scheduled to hit Netflix on December 23, but the film is currently being screened in theaters for one week.

The Analysis:

During the height of the 2020 COVID lockdown, eccentric tech mogul Miles Bron invites his inner circle of friends to a private Greek island. He has an elaborate murder mystery party planned and even famous detective Benoit Blanc will be in attendance. When someone ends up dead for real, it’s Blanc’s job to untangle the group’s relationships and reveal the murderer before it’s too late.

This movie has gotten excellent reviews from critics and audiences alike. I did like the film but I have to admit I was slightly underwhelmed. I absolutely loved Knives Out and the classic mystery vibe of that movie. In contrast, Glass Onion has a way more modern feel and is a bit over the top. The film offers funny but pointed commentary on celebrities and the ridiculously wealthy, highlighting the opportunistic nature of many modern influencers and stars. This movie feels much more like a comedy with mystery as a sub-genre.

I liked the cast and they all acted well, although I found a couple of the side characters to be wholly unnecessary. The first quarter of the film reminded me a bit of Death on the Nile (2022). Daniel Craig is probably the best part but Edward Norton crushed it in his role as well. There were some funny 2020 references to the pandemic that were relatable and funny without feeling too heavy. A twist around the halfway point of the movie feels like an early climax, but the ending was pretty dramatic and entertaining.

For a Netflix film, I loved the idea of a sneak preview in theaters followed by a release on the streaming platform about a month later. I’m glad I got to see the movie and the theatrical release certainly built up some hype around the movie. If you aren’t able to make it to theaters in the next couple days, the movie will be available to stream just before Christmas.
