Ghost 19 by Simone St. James (2022)

A short mystery with a potentially supernatural twist.

Laura’s Rating: 3/5 Stars

Plot: Seeking some peace and quiet, Ginette Cox moves from NYC to a small suburban town in 1959. She becomes obsessed with watching her neighbors and is convinced that the house she is living in doesn’t want her to leave. Is she going mad or is there something darker at play?

Opinion: I just feel like I’ve read this story too many times before. An unreliable narrator with a substance abuse program watches people she doesn’t know and witnesses something that could be a murder or might just be a hallucination. It was basically a shorter version of The Woman in the Window or even The Girl on the Train. I’m pretty over this formula. To be fair, I may have liked this better had I not read similar stories before discovering this one so if this plot line doesn’t sound familiar, maybe give it a try.

I read this specifically because it was by Simone St. James, an author I’ve really enjoyed reading in recent years. However, this was pretty disappointing and forgettable for me. I think you can skip it. Read The Haunting of Maddy Clare or The Sun Down Motel instead if you want to try a book by the author.
