Funny Story by Emily Henry (2024)
A romance between two unlikely characters thrown together by circumstance.
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
Plot: Daphne and Peter have a perfect relationship, until Peter realizes he’s in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Stranded in Peter’s hometown, newly single and with no friends or family nearby, Daphne turns to the only person in a similar situation to her, Petra’s newly ex-boyfriend Miles.
Analysis: As expected, Funny Story is well written and made me want to keep reading. The book does a good job of showing that sometimes things get worse before they get better and heartbreak or change can be necessary to make a path for a better outcome.
Generally, I think Henry’s books have an impressive amount of depth for romance novels, but this time the characters and plot were slightly lacking for me. Daphne was whiny and had approximately zero self awareness, making her difficult to like or identify with as the main character. Her friend Ashley at the library was way too sensitive, but also underdeveloped. Miles was too likable and easy going in an unrealistic way. For these reasons, this book was a small step down for me from Emily Henry’s other books. That being said, it still squeaks out 4 stars.
Emily Henry is some of the only romance that I’ll read for a reason. Her writing is witty and her characters are dynamic. I’d recommend her other books first, but I still enjoyed Funny Story.
