Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (2023)

A 2023 Goodreads Choice Award winner that has fantasy, romance, and intrigue.

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

Plot: Violet Sorrengail is planning to enter the Scribe Quadrant at the war college, where she can read and study in peace. The commanding general - her mother - has a different plan for Violet: become a dragon rider. Violet’s delicate frame isn’t exactly built for the brutal, physical demands of dragon riding. Not to mention the competitive and vindictive students that she’ll be surrounded by as they all vie to bond with a dragon.

Analysis: The book was compelling and better written than comparable books like A Court of Thorns and Roses. Basgiath War College is a cool setting and I’d like to explore the different quadrants more in future books. The dragons are pretty cool and their bonds with riders are interesting. The book is violent and harsh in places without being too graphic. The book did suspense and romance quite well, which gets the reader invested in the story.

Violet rode the line between weak and strong, making her relatable without being too whiny. The side characters could use a little more development but they were identifiable enough that I could keep track of them. I didn’t love the part of the book from Xaden’s perspective. I liked him being a little dark and mysterious and being inside his head took away some of the mystery.

Overall, I think Fourth Wing is a fun fantasy/romance and I’d recommend it for someone interested in the genre.
