Foe by Iain Reid (2018)
A haunting and uneasy domestic drama told through a science-fiction lens.
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
Plot: Set in the somewhat near future, Junior and his wife Henrietta live on an isolated farm in the country. One day, a man arrives at the house to tell Junior that he has been selected for a far away journey. He may be gone for some time, but Henrietta won’t be alone while he’s gone.
Analysis: This book was an unsettling sci-fi adventure that didn’t waste time on too much detail or world building. The pacing is slow, but the tension continues to mount through the whole book. At just 261 pages or less than 6 hours on audio, the book contains a lot of layers despite the shorter length.
While the audio narration was good, I recommend reading a physical copy of this rather than listening to the audiobook, as some subtleties are lost without the actual text. I finished reading Foe in just one day and I can’t wait to read another of the author’s books. I’d highly recommend this to fans of reality based sci-fi and shows like The Twilight Zone.
