Illumination Presents: Dr. Seuss' the Grinch (2018)

Laura’s Rating 4.5/5 Stars

As a loyalist to the classic 1966 animated Grinch, I was unsure if I would enjoy another remake. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this recent version, which included big names like Benedict Cumberbatch, Pharrell Williams, Rashida Jones, and Kenan Thompson.

The Analysis:

The plot of the story remains largely the same, with the Grinch hating Christmas, the Whos, and their excessive celebrations. His loyal dog, Max, is his only companion. After hearing of plans for even bigger festivities than usual, the Grinch decides he must stop Christmas from coming (but how?)

The Grinch is given a quick backstory of orphan loneliness which felt predictable, but served its purpose. New characters like Cindy Lou’s mother, Donna, and cheery Bricklebaum were arguably unnecessary, although I enjoyed their performances. Max is both a more willing participant in the Grinch’s shenanigans and is more loved and appreciated by the Grinch in this version, which I liked. The movie is basically a mashup between the Grinch story and Despicable Me, Illumination’s other huge blockbuster. Drawing on the studio’s strengths, the films share an animation style, similar kooky inventions, and even a similar main song.

Balancing classic lines and elements with new characters and perspective, the movie feels familiar but fresh. It has the same amusing and heartwarming story as you’d expect and is perfect to put viewers in the Christmas spirit. I recommend giving this most recent interpretation of Dr. Seuss' the Grinch a watch.
