Don’t Worry Darling (2022)

I was able to see this movie at the Grandview Theater in Columbus and enjoy their Don't Worry Darling themed cocktail menu!

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

You may have seen the drama surrounding this film from cast replacements to social media snubs, reports of cast members spitting on one another and laughable interviews with the actors. Don’t Worry Darling has definitely gotten a lot of buzz in the press but has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.

The Analysis:

Housewife Alice lives with her adoring husband Jack in a manicured mid century neighborhood, with a beautiful home, nice car, and friendly neighbors. Jack and the other husbands do classified work for the Victory Project, while their wives happily tend to the house and kids and socialize with one another. Despite her seemingly perfect life, Alice starts to get a sense that something is off…

The film is very stylish with perfectly curated 1950s fashion, set design, and music. The cinematography is gorgeous and well shot. I don’t want to spoil anything so I won’t say much other than the movie is weird and unexpected but I liked it. It’s probably not for everyone, but because I watch a decent amount of movies, I enjoy something unexpected. It is a thriller so there are a few unsettling scenes, but it’s not scary. Florence Pugh’s acting is fantastic in the lead role and while leading man Harry Styles was nothing special, I thought he was serviceable in his role. The supporting cast was good as well, including director Olivia Wilde in her acting role.

The movie isn’t perfect and there are a few scenes that are confusing or even unnecessary. The middle of the movie did drag on a tad too long in my opinion, especially considering that the movie wraps up pretty quickly once things really start moving. Admittedly, there are some unanswered questions (call them plot holes if you wish), but I think keeping some of the film unexplained works and keeps the audience thinking after the credits roll. I’d recommend the movie with the caveat that it’s probably not for everyone.
