Dear Lit and Flicks: Children's Books

Dear Lit and Flicks,

Do you have any children’s books that you enjoyed when you were a child? Do you have any that you would recommend for different age groups?

Sincerely

Curious Grandma

---------------------------------------

Dear Curious Grandma,

I’m glad you asked about this! I absolutely adored reading when I was growing up (and still do). If we’re going way back, I loved Boo, Baa, La La La! as a baby. I read a lot of Magic Tree House and Nancy Drew books as a kid. A couple of my favorites for younger grade school kids would be Love Among the Walnuts by Jean Ferris and The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. I also remember tearing through The Anybodies series by N.E. Bode (pen name for Julianna Baggott). Some young adult books for approximately middle school would be The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart and Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (part of a series). My absolute favorite series as a kid was A Series of Unfortunate Events. The books are interesting and challenging, with tons of unusual words and phrases explained in a great way to help expand the vocabulary of young readers. I’m actually slowly working on re-reading all 13 books in that series.

I just recently read The Giver as an adult, but many people read it in middle school and I’d recommend it to all ages. I would also encourage kids to read books that aren’t necessarily aimed at children (within reason). This is a great way to challenge kids and also expose them to more serious topics. A great example would be To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The book is very digestible for middle school aged children, but the content is serious and impactful. Reading is so important for children and young adults and I hope that maybe some of my suggestions are enjoyed by others!

Sincerely,

Lit and Flicks
