Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

A romance set amongst the wealthiest families in Asia.

Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars

Plot: When Chinese American Rachel Chu’s boyfriend Nick invites her to go to his friend’s wedding, she has no idea what she’s in for. Turns out, Nick is part of the incredibly wealthy Young family in Singapore and is a sought after eligible bachelor back home.

Analysis: The movie is visually stunning, especially the party scenes with lavish decor and backdrops. The music, including Asian versions of American songs, was fun and set the cultural tone. It was cool to see a movie starring all Asian actors and actresses and featuring Chinese traditions. Constance Wu is a likable and relatable lead and Awkwafina’s over-the-top performance landed well, as it felt appropriate for her character.

The story is nothing too sophisticated, as it follows a typical rom com type plot. But it is fun and charming enough to pull at the heartstrings. Crazy Rich Asians was a fun watch and I’d definitely recommend if you’re looking for a fun romance.
