An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena
Laura’s Rating: 4/5 Stars
This was my first book by Shari Lapena and I will definitely be revisiting this author. This book has a similar feel to a classic Agatha Christie mystery and even makes reference to the novelist within the story. I would say it even has a few more twists than your typical Christie book, so fans of more modern thrillers would enjoy it as well.
The Analysis:
A group of strangers looking for a relaxing weekend away find themselves snowed in at an isolated inn in upstate New York. When one of the guests is found dead, everyone becomes suspicious and they must decide who to trust in order to survive the weekend.
The setting of an charming lodge in the wilderness is perfect for this book. It sets the scene for a cozy weekend, but the isolated location allows it to quickly transform from serene to sinister. The snow storm causes a power outage, which not only cuts off the guests from the outside world, but also plunges them into darkness as night falls. With phones losing battery and resources becoming scarce, the reader can feel the sense of desperation rising, which adds to the claustrophobic feeling of a locked room mystery. Author Shari Lapena does a good job of creating multiple suspects, not giving too much away but making everyone suspicious with their own problems and secrets. I read An Unwanted Guest in just a few days and I highly recommend reading this over a snowy weekend.
