A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (2015)
Laura’s Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
This book has been popular for a while and Backman is a favorite author of my mom’s so I wanted to give this book a try. It definitely exceeded my expectations.
The Analysis:
At first glance, Ove seems like a grumpy old man that does not wish to be bothered. This is true. Ove is old fashioned and “is the sort of man who checks the status of all things by giving them a good kick.” He is very particular about how things are done and keeps to a rigid routine. However, when new neighbors move in, Ove’s orderly world is thrown into a chaos that disrupts his careful plans.
This book makes you appreciate your loved ones, even the ones that may be stubborn or difficult at times. Despite Ove’s curmudgeonly exterior, he may just charm his way into your heart. As the book says “Love is a strange thing. It takes you by surprise.” The best word for this book is bittersweet. It made me smile and cry. Ove’s story is happy, sad, and full of wisdom. This book offers charming insight into the little things in life and I’d love to share more of my favorite parts but I don’t want to ruin anything in the plot for future readers.
A Man Called Ove can appeal to a wide audience and I would definitely recommend this book. I actually plan to start another by the author very soon so keep your eyes out for a future review.
